How to Buy Successful Domain Names

You know you've got a successful domain name if it passes what we call the "Friend on the Street" test. Suppose you meet a friend while walking on the street and during the course of the conversation, you mention the domain name of your website to him or her. Assume it's several hours before your friend gets on the Internet. What are the chances your friend will be able to successfully recall your domain name?

Here are few guidelines for choosing a successful domain name:

1. If you can get the .com, get it, no matter what! The .net and .org are optional, but usually unnecessary if you already own the .com.
2. If you can get your organization's NAME.COM, get it! Domain name squatters love to buy up business names and sell ads. Don't become a victim.
3. The shorter it is, the better. (General Rule)
4. The easier it is to spell, the better. (Always)
5. Consider mis-spellings and variations. For example, we own both bensontechnology.com and bensontechnologies.com. In hindsight, we would have also purchased bensontech.com but had to settle for bensont.com.

Also, don't feel limited to only one domain name. Sure you will need a primary domain name for your website and email addresses, but you can always get more than one domain name and point them to the same place.

For these reasons, we suggest you purchase (at minimum)
TheOfficialNameOfYourOrganization.COM and TheNameOfYourProductOrService.COM.

When you are ready, go to www.bensontechnology.net and purchase your new domain names. This way you will own it in YOUR NAME no matter who designs your website. It will take just a few moments and all you'll need is a valid credit card. If you are currently paying more than $10 per domain name per year, then it is time to transfer.
